Instructions:
Make the stones using Easy Cast clear epoxy (Environmental Technology Inc.).Work
in a well vented area.
Carefully follow the direction on the package exactly as written, to prepare the
epoxy. Fill the Krafty Lady Art Mould half way (no release spray needed) and
layer in printed photos, scraps of paper, book pages, iridescent film, or other
items. Fill the rest of the mould. Let harden for 12-24 hours. Unmould and sand
the edges smooth then sand and polish further using fine grit polishing papers
(wet/dry sandpaper) starting with 400, and working your way up to 8000 (it's
important to not skip grits: 400, 600, 1200, 4000, 6000, 8000). Seal with a coat
of Future Floor Finish.
Find some old books the size of the Zen garden box, I used two book stacked to
accommodate the entire depth of the box. Open the front cover of the top book and outline the
Zen Garden box on the first page. Using a craft knife and a ruler carve out a niche.
You will need patience, and must take your time while carving away at the pages. Check for fit of
the box.The hole in the top cover of the top book has to be just big enough
to extend over the lip of the box. A good way to mark it is to paint the lip of
the Zen Garden box when it's inside the niche, close the cover of the book to
make an imprint, and then when you open the lid, you will see exactly where to
cut your line. Proceed to cut the book cover. Glue the pages together and then
glue the box in the books.
Paint with gesso add texture by tapping your brush onto the wet gesso. Paint
with layers of Golden's Fluid Acrylic Paint. Start with a layer of iridescent
bright gold, let dry. Mix quinacridone with a little primary magenta and water
and paint few washes of color letting it dry in-between. Paint heavy body medium
over a stencil filling the spaces and then lift leaving the Asian script texture
on the book's surface. When the stenciling medium is dry, iron leafing foil onto
the medium and remove the backing.
Paint the rake the same way.
